Sony is going all in on HD with the new Sony Xperia ion. This is Sony’s first 4G LTE smartphone and will sport a 4.6-inch HD Reality display coming in at 1280×720. Sony also included a HDMI port to connect to your big screen for mind blowing HD content. The HDMI port when connected opened the Xperia ion TV launcher which has a carousel of shortcuts that you can control using your TV’s remote!

The camera on the Xperia shows that Sony has been watching the competition. The Xperia ion will rock a 12 megapixel “Fast Capture” camera with a quick launch feature that sounds similar to the HTC One series. The Xperia can go from stand by to first camera shot in 1.5 seconds.

Another awesome feature is the all around HD recording. You get full 1080p video from rear camera and 720p video from the front. Weather you are video chatting, doing a vlog or recording an awesome memorable moment you will get the best quality video recorded.

The Xperia ion has NFC or near field communication technology installed which allow you to pay for items with Google wallet by tapping your phone on a pad. But Sony goes one further and gives you SmartTags. SmartTags let you save certain preferred settings for example turn on GPS when in the car or activate music player when going for a run, to even setting your phone to silent when its bed time. All this by tapping a little tag that you leave in those designed places to activate the settings. Its kinda like the new car keys where they just have to be in the car with you for the motor to start.

Key Specs:

• 4.6″ 720p HD Reality Display with MOBILE BRAVIA Engine for unbeatable HD viewing.

• HD imaging excellence from Sony : 12MP camera with Exmor R™ for Mobile camera sensor, 1080p HD video recording on primary camera, 720p HD front-facing chat camera

• Easy multi-screen connectivity with HDMI and DLNA®

• 1.5 Ghz Dual core processor

• 16 GB internal memory with microSD™ expansion slot that supports up to 32 GB

• PlayStation Certified for high quality mobile gaming

While those are amazing stats for a smartphone the price point is where Sony may have a leg up on the competition. The Sony Xperia ion is coming Exclusively to AT&T on June 24th for $99.99 with a two-year agreement. That’s a cool Benjamin for a cool phone. I’ll be looking watching for it for sure.

What are your thoughts on this device? Does it sound like the HD device of your dreams? Do you plan on upgrading to it later this month?
